The Wonderful Chimpanzee

The Wonderful Chimpanzee
by Christopher Pollard
Fall 1994
The Philadelphia Zoo is a great place to see many different animals from around the globe. The most entertaining and watched animal is probably the chimpanees.

People love to watch them because they swing all over their cages, make hilarious noises and put on an acting show for all the viewers.

Whenever anyone visits the zoo the Primate house is a must see attraction for everyone of all ages.

The Primate house is the home for one of the worlds most lovable mammals. This mammal stands at 2 ½ to 3 feet tall has black, matted fur all over his body except at his face, hands, and feet and has little beady eyes that stear people down whenever there is a bananna in their hand. These primates are call chimpanzees.

The instant the door to the primate house is opened the aroma and stink of animals can be smelled. Along with that first whiff of odor comes the recognizable shrieking of all the primates inside. The first primates seen are those that are not to popular because they are not to energedic and like to keep to themselves. But then half way through the house there is a big herd of people standing and watching in wonder at the lovable chimpanzees.

The chimps are a big attractions because they are so much fun to watch. They put on a great show for everyone. The chimps with their long arms, swing from bar to bar chasing one another or just having fun jumping and swinging around. While they are swinging around they are laughing and shriek at one another or just at anything. They love to play tag throughout their cages because they get to run around and have fun. It is fun to watch the baby chimps because they can not jump or swing very far so they move real slow and only jump a little ways.

When the chimp trainer shows up on the top of the cage all the monkeys know it is feeding time. They scramble to the top of the cage to grab hold of their diner or lunch. They were feed fruit like bannanns, apples and pears along with some plant leaves on sticks. There is usually not enough room for all of them so some must sit back and wait for one of the others to get full or if something drops to the ground they can quick scurry and pick it up. The little chimps have no problem eating because they can just swing past the older, bigger chimps and grab something small to eat.
